Friends remember John Wooden

A public memorial service for former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden was held Saturday at Pauley Pavilion on the campus of UCLA. Wooden passed away at the age of 99 on June 4.

4,000 attended the service emceed by broadcaster Al Michaels. Players, collegues and others shared memories and thoughts about the legendary coach.

UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero told those assembled that Section 103B, Row 2, Seat 1 at Pauley Pavilion was henceforth retired. That seat is where Wooden watched UCLA games in his later years.

His longtime friend and once neighbor, Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully spoke by video at the service, as did broadcaster Dick Enberg.

Former Wooden pupil Jamaal Wilkes said, "He had a magnificent obsession with caring, sharing and giving to all."

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said he was with Wooden's family when he died, "It was a tough day to be sure, but by sharing the pain and remembering those wonderful lessons that he taught us, we were able to realize that our pain was a small price to pay for the privilege from learning from the master."
