The IZOD IndyCar series is at Texas Motorspeedway for a 550k race under the lights this weekend. It's the 21st race at the track for the IndyCar series, having raced their twice a season from 1998-2004. Race Notes:
The driver who has gone on to win the championship has won at Texas four times. Scott Dixon won at Texas in 2008, Tony Kanaan won Texas 1 in 2004, Sam Hornish Jr. won Texas 2 in 2002, clinching the title, and Hornish also won Texas 2 in 2001, celebrating the championship he had clinched at the previous race.
In 13 seasons, seven drivers have won the seventh race of the season and also won the championship. They are Dario Franchitti (2009, Iowa) Scott Dixon (2008, Texas and 2003, Richmond), Sam Hornish Jr. (2006, Richmond), Greg Ray (1999, Dover), Kenny Brack (1998, Charlotte) and Tony Stewart (1997, Charlotte).
Three drivers – Arie Luyendyk (1997), Scott Dixon (2008), Helio Castroneves (’09) – have won the Indianapolis 500 and Firestone 550K in the same season.
Team Penske has won five times at Texas, including four of the last six races. Helio Castroneves won in 2004, 2006 and 2009, and Sam Hornish Jr. won in 2007.
Helio Castroneves has seven top-five finishes in 11 starts at Texas.
Tony Kanaan has six top-five finishes in nine starts at Texas.
Danica Patrick has three consecutive top-10 finishes at Texas.
Dan Wheldon has three third-place finishes at Texas
