The New Orleans Hornets have reached an agreement to make Monty Williams their next head coach.

Williams, 38, has served as an assistant coach with the Portland Trailblazers under Nate McMillan for the last five season.

According to some reports, the job became Williams' after Boston assistant Tom Thibodeau turned down New Orleans in order to pursue a job with Chicago.

Williams played in the NBA for nine seasons, before retiring in 2003. He was originally drafted by the New York Knicks in 1994.

New Orleans fired Byron Scott just nine games into the 2009-10 season, and general manager Jeff Bower took over as coach. The team finished with a 37-45 record.

New Orleans holds the 11th overall pick in this month's NBA Draft.
