Red Sox designate Lugo for assignment

The Boston Herald is reporting that the Boston Red Sox have designated shortstop Julio Lugo for assignment. The Red sox still owe Lugo $13 million remaining on his initial four year $32 million dollar contract he signed in 2007. The Red Sox will have 10 days to either trade Lugo or release him. Once Lugo, is released the team will owe him the remaining $13 million.

“When you see a good looking girl, you get married and sometimes things don’t work out,” Lugo said. “I gave it my best and unfortunately things didn’t work out. This is the best for both parties. I wanted it to work out but it didn’t.”

The Herald reports that the Cubs, Mets and Cardinals have expressed interest in Lugo

The Red Sox are activate  shortstop Jed Lawrie off of the disabled list on Saturday, along third basemen Mike Lowell perhaps Friday or Saturday.
