The quality difference between Pac-10 football and Big Ten football might be in the eye of the beholder, but most will agree, when Ohio State and Michigan play each fall, that perhaps on a larger scale, the contest is considered a better game to watch than say USC-UCLA, at least at the national level. That game, Sat. Nov. 27 no doubt will appear on ABC or ESPN, not the Big Ten Network. Wednesday Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott told the New York Times, that when the conference forms its new cable television network it will show more 'premier programming', also known as better football games, and yes, better matchups than we get on the Big Ten Network. The Pac-10's current deals with ESPN and Fox Sports Net expire in 2011, and when Scott and the conference negotiate new contracts that could include the stipulation that the Pac-12 Network will get its fair share of top games. The Big Ten Network generally is great for watching non-conference games earlier in the season that in years past weren't available on TV at all or at least not available to viewers outside the school's home market.

It would turn a game like USC-UCLA into even less of a national event. It could even have a negative effect on recruiting if a marquee game appeared on a parochial network instead of a truly national one.
