Nielsen estimates that an average of 106.5 million people viewed Sunday’s Super Bowl 44 victory by the New Orleans Saints. It moves past the series finale of the comedy M-A-S-H as the most watched television program in United States history.
The 1983 series finale of M-A-S-H was viewed by more than 105.97 million people. But it must be noted that the U.S population has grown since 1983, so M-A-S-H still did pretty good.
The NFL puts the total number of people who saw some part of the game at 153.4 million surpassing last year’s Steelers-Cardinals match-up which drew 151.6 million viewers.
The Super Bowl earned an average overnight household rating/share of 46.4/68, the highest-rated Super Bowl in the metered markets in 23 years (1/25/87; 47.8/68; CBS Sports’ coverage of Super Bowl XXI – Phil Simms-led New York Giants’ win over Denver). The difference of course is that there are now more viewers per household than there was in 1987.
If you’re too young to remember M-A-S-H, it was a comedy based on some zany Doctor’s based in South Korea during the Korean War. It premiered in 1972 and was based on the 1970 movie by the same title, which was based on the 1968 Novel Three Army Doctors, by Richard Hooker.
