The 2010 Vancouver Olympics will begin Friday night (2/12) with the opening ceremonies from the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at the BC Place Stadium from 9 p.m. EST-Midnight EST or 6 p.m.-9 p.m. PST local time.
The ceremonies can be seen on U.S Television beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET and lasting until midnight on NBC. In Canada, coverage of the opening ceremonies will begin at 6:00 p.m. EST on CTV, TSN, and RDS, along with pre-ceremony coverage including the Olympic Torch relay all through the day on Friday. The NBC network schedule is divided into three dayparts – afternoon, primetime and late night – for a total of 193.5 hours of coverage over 17 days beginning with the Opening Ceremony on Friday. NBC Universal paid $820 million for the Vancouver Winter Olympics rights compared to $243 million by CBS for the 1992 games at Albertville. The 2010 games will be the first Winter Olympics broadcast entirely in HD.
If your looking for streams online, NBC says they will police pirated online streams and videos. The network is focusing on providing short clipped highlights on their websites, only Hockey and Curling will be shown online.
NBC’s Primetime coverage will heavily consist of men’s and women’s figure skating and alpine skiing. Other sports to be featured in primetime will include freestyle skiing, speed skating, snowboarding, and short track.
55,000 people will be in attendance to watch the opening ceremonies in person at BC Place Stadium. The Order of the nations will take place with countries entering in alphabetical order. The exceptions being Greece, who always enters first, and Canada which will enter last this year.
There are seven sports at this year’s Olympics, with 87 medal events taking place. The sports include Biathlon, Bobsleigh and Skelton, Curling, Ice Hockey, Luge, Skating (Figure Skating, Short Track/Long Track SpeedSkating) Sking (Alpine, Cross Country, Freestyle, Nordic combined, Ski Jumping) and Snowboarding.
Twelve competion venues are spread out in four locations. Vancouver, Whistler, West Vancouver and Richmond.
At Vancouver, the Canada Hockey Place, will host Hockey. The Vancouver Olympic Center will host exclusively Curling. The Pacific Coliseum will hold Figure Skating and Short Track Speedskating. The UBC Thunderbird Arena will host Ice Hockey and Ice Sledge Hockey. And an Olympic Village is in Vancouver.
In Whistler, the Whistler Sliding Centre will host bobsled, Luge and Skelton. Whistler Creekside, will host Alpine Sking. The Whistler Olympic Park will host Biathlon, Cross Country Sking, Nordic Combined, and Ski Jumping. In Richmond, the Richmond Olympic Oval will host Speedskating.
In West Vancouver at Cypress Mountain, Freestyle Skiing (Aerials, Moguls, Ski Cross), Snowboard (Parallel Giant Slalom, Halfpipe, Snowboard Cross) will be held.
Olympic Winter Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Nightly Victory Ceremonies take place at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
