The Southern League came down hard on Tennessee Smokies manager Ryne Sandberg on Monday.
The league fined and suspended the Hall of Famer for three games after he bumped umpire Chris Ward and was ejected during the ninth inning of the Smokies’ 5-3 victory over the Huntsville Stars at Smokies Park.
Sandberg began serving his suspension at Carolina, where the Smokies lost 8-1 on Monday night. He is eligible to return for Thursday’s game against the Montgomery Biscuits at Smokies Park.
The ejection was Sandber’s sixth of the season and third in seven days.
