DuPuy ‘I accept what Ortiz says’

“I’m not in a position to believe or disbelieve. I accept what (David Ortiz) says,” Bob DuPuy, baseball’s president and chief operating officer, told the Asssociated Press.

David Ortiz claimed Saturday that the reason his name is on the infamous BALCO list is because of nutrional supplements.

“”I consider myself one of those guys who were definitely a little bit careless back in the days when I was buying supplements — legal supplements — over the counter,” Ortiz said at a Yankee Stadium press conference. “But I never bought steroids or used steroids. I never thought buying supplements was going to hurt somebody’s feelings. If that happened, I’m sorry about it.”

While the MLBPA backing Ortiz is one thing, having the MLB’s number two honcho back Ortiz shows how baseball really naive MLB is about public relations.

DuPuy went on to say “I understand anyone’s frustration. I’ve seen not just Hank Aaron, but Mark Teixeira I think made the statement, and maybe Vernon Wells,” DuPuy said. “I’ve seen three or four people in the last week say we ought to just have the results out there and be done with it.

“First of all, we don’t have the list, so that’s not something that’s within our control.”
