ESPN and The Detroit News reported Saturday afternoon that the University of Michigan will conduct an internal investigation into its athletic department following the firing of head football coach Sherrone Moore this week.
The scope of that investigation could have far-reaching implications, including the future of athletic director Warde Manuel, whose nearly decade-long tenure in Ann Arbor is now under increased scrutiny. Manuel has served as Michigan’s athletic director since 2016, a run highlighted by the Wolverines’ 2024 national championship, ending a football title drought that dated back to 1997
According to ESPN, uncertainty surrounding Manuel’s status intensified late last week. “A high-level meeting of university officials was held Thursday evening, sources told ESPN, leading to intense speculation about Manuel’s future, but he remains on the job. The university would owe Manuel, 57, who signed a new five-year contract in December 2024, about $6.75 million if it dismissed him without cause.”
Moore was fired Wednesday after the school found credible evidence the coach had engaged in an inappropriate romantic relationship with a staff member, and was subsequently arrested on third-degree felony home invasion, stalking in a domestic relationship, and misdemeanor breaking and entering charges.
