Gotta give it up for Kirk Herbstreit. It seems at times he’s been polarizing in college football, simply because he doesn’t always agree with the popular consensus in college sports or otherwise. Fan bases take issue with any criticism or slight against their school, favorite player or coach.
Ironically, speaking on a podcast this week, he bemoaned click bait culture, which now is pretty much “clip bait” culture and specifically TV shows and NFL themed shows where they sit around and argue for the sake of argument. He said he would leave TV studio work if he ever had to do such a show. Kudos to Herbstreit.
Podcasts are big money. Everyone’s attempting to become the next big thing, and the loudest voice seems to win, at least in the short term. Studio TV shows seem to mirror that, and FS1 ESPN and other networks have filled their time slots with those shows.
The formula works, the hot take, two analysts with opposite opinions or just a really strong, loud vocal mess about nothing. It’s on TV every day and it apparently works to a certain extent.
According to some estimates, there are over 4 million podcasts worldwide and of course a good chunk of that is probably sports themed podcasts. It’s a bubble and a gold rush, but for now it’s here to stay.
