For 19 years, the Patriots won more games than they lost. From 2001-2019 just once did they win less than ten games (2000), and won six Super Bowls in the meantime. The glory years.
Team owner Robert Kraft said it himself when firing Jarred Mayo last week. He implied he really didn’t want to fire the former alumni, but he said the team is the people’s teams, a trust of the people.
“I have always considered myself and my family as custodians of a public asset,” Kraft said in the statement announcing the firing of Mayo following the 4-13 2024 campaign.
“We have tremendous fans who expect and deserve a better product than we have delivered in recent years.”
Believe him or not, Kraft and the NFL are running a business. He wants his fans to be happy. He’s in a business that thrives on popularity and winning on Sunday. So no bigger splash and offseason pick up then to pick up Patriots Hall of Famer Mike V. to lead New England’s most famous football team.
Is it a great hire?
It’s a headline – press conference hire to be sure, (tune in Monday at 12 pm) but Vrable has had some success as an NFL head coach. He’s got the necessary experience by a long shot by today’s NFL standards.
Six years in Nashville netted three playoff appearances, five total playoff games. In 99 total games as a head coach, his teams won 54 and lost 45.
Let’s make New England football fans happy, there are a lot of them.
And most Patriot fans will be happy with Vrabel, a nostalgia hire who might actually win some games.
