The Chicago White Sox have signed right-handed relief pitcher J.J. Putz to a one-year, $3-million contract, the team announced Friday. Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal says that Putz could receive $3 million in bonuses based on the number of games he plays in in 2010.
With the New York Mets last season, Putz compiled a 1-4 record with a 5.22 ERA in 29 relief appearances. He underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur in his right elbow on June 9 and missed the remainder of the season.
Putz, 32, has spent seven years in the majors, and was named as a reliever to the 2007 American League All-Star team with Seattle. He was with the Mariners from 2003-2008 before he was traded to the Mets as part of a three-team deal on December 11, 2008. He was a member of the United States roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
